Sacral Nerve Stimulation
Sacral Nerve Stimulation also called sacral nerve neuro-modulation or SNM is use for bladder incontinence, specifically urge incontinence caused by an overactive bladder. This is for patience who do not respond to other behavioral treatments or medication. For patients with an intact neurological intake sacral plexus and normal sphincter anatomy, sacral nerve stimulation can be used as a means to help with bladder control and to overall improve symptoms when conservative therapy is ineffective. Sacral nerve stimulation is said to be 80% effective in such patients.
While the mechanism of action of sacral nerve stimulation in improving fecal continence is not yet determined or clear, it appears to work through modulating sacral nerve responses as opposed to direct stimulation of the nerve. This could be something to look into if you are interested in this type of treatment, but of course with any bladder or bowel issue it is important to talk to your doctor or physician first.
